What To Do If a Pipe Bursts In Your Home

The first thing you need to do is remain calm and call a professional restoration company near you. Then, follow these easy steps to minimize the damage.

Step 1: Shut Off Your Main Water Valve

Shut off your home’s main water valve immediately. Don’t know where your main water shut-off valve is? Check the inside of your house.

For homes built on basements or crawl spaces, the valve is often located on a wall along the front of your house. For homes built on slabs, the valve is most likely on top of or beneath your water heater.

Step 2: Shut Off the Electricity

Go to your breaker box and shut off electricity to the area where the water damage occurred. If water is coming out of the breaker box or if there is standing water, wait for a professional to do this.

Step 3: Start Cleaning Up the Water

Grab a bucket, mop, and towels and start cleaning up as much of the water as you can. This will help prevent mold from setting and prevent further water damage to your home. If you can, move furniture and valuables to an unaffected area of the home.

Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Water Damage From a Burst Pipe

The quick answer: Yes.

Most home insurance policies cover water damage from “sudden and accidental” causes, such as burst or broken pipes. This means insurers will cover repairs and restoration costs, if, for example, an upstairs pipe bursts and you need ceiling water damage repair or your clothes and furniture were ruined (thank goodness!)

If you have any questions about the claims process, call us now. We negotiate with insurance companies all the time and know how to get you the most for your losses.

The Average Cost of
Burst Pipe Water Damage Cleanup and Repairs

Depending on the severity of the pipe break, plumbing costs can run anywhere between $350 to $2000.

Each water damage situation is unique, so restoration costs will vary. You can typically expect to pay around $1,000 to $4,000 in water cleanup and repairs from a burst pipe. For water leak cleanup and repairs, you can expect to pay around $250- $1000 (again, all of the above are rough estimates).

To help you better understand the costs, we’ve provided a list of factors restoration companies use to determine pricing.

Cost Factor #1: Source of the Water

Water damage is categorized by the level of contaminants it contains.

  • Clean water: This refers to water that does not pose a threat to anyone. Clean water is the least costly to deal with and broken pipes often fall into this category.
  • Grey water: This refers to water that contains biological or chemical contaminants and can cause illness if dealt with improperly. Examples include water from toilet bowls with urine or water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines.
  • Black water: This source of water is highly unsanitary and might cause severe illness if you come into contact with it. Examples include sewage or river overflows.

Cost Factor #2: Amount of Water and Size of the Affected Area

How much water entered the home and how far the water damage spread are obvious cost factors. Most restoration companies will calculate the cost using the volume of water and square footage of the affected area as a base.

Cost Factor #3: Extent of Damage and Materials Involved

The more damage your property takes on, the higher the cost. For instance, replacing carpet that is soaked with clean water is much cheaper than replacing antique wood floors or cleaning a mold infestation.
